The posthumous album is a tough thing to get right. If nothing else, it can be hard for fans to ascertain what’s really representative of an artist’s vision versus what was completed after death to the sometimes less than exacting specifications of the stewards of said estate. In the case of dearly departed hip-hop legend DMX, however, the Dog-loving faithful had nothing to worry about. “All of the songs was finished,” longtime friend, collaborator, and executive producer of his Exodus album Swizz Beatz tells Apple Music. “This album was done while he was living. I know they’re saying ‘the album after he's gone,’ but really he did the album before he was gone.”

Pop Smoke was initially slated to appear on “Money Money Money,” but a leak forced Swizz to switch up the plan and bring on Moneybagg Yo. Otherwise, though, Exodus is exactly how X designed it—one of hip-hop’s most impactful MCs making space for the voices he revered, while staying true to a career-long practice of baring his soul on record. “He gave people real shit,” Swizz says. “He gave you a front-row seat into his life, because he loved his fans, he loved his people, and it's where he was at. He was comfortable, and I think that every artist should get to that level one day, to where they’re not capping and they’re saying real things that are happening in their life and that they’re going through. And it should be uncut, like Dog did on this record.”

On January 20, 2020, producer Swizz Beatz met up with Brooklyn rapper Pop Smoke in a New York studio. Pop Smoke recorded a verse for Swizz, but never saw it release since he was tragically murdered just a month later.
When production for DMX’s album Exodus began in July of the same year, Swizz showed X the song and he agreed to use it, dubbing the track “Money Money Money.” X went on Drink Champs in February 2021 to announce the collab to his fans, who began to highly anticipate it – but not even 2 months later, DMX had also passed away. With both artists on the promised song dead, its mystique grew.
In April 2021, Pop Smoke’s record label Republic Records denied clearance of the song behind the scenes. This was because they had already made plans to remix the verse Pop recorded for Swizz onto the song “Demeanor,” so they could release it as a single.
This was not the first time Republic had done something like this. Just a year prior, they took a verse Pop Smoke recorded for an underground rapper named Curly Savv off of the song “RUNTZ” and put it onto the Lil Tjay song “Zoo York.”
Since Pop Smoke’s verse had to be scrapped, Swizz contacted Moneybagg Yo, who sent back a verse in less than 24 hours. Swizz Beatz explained that he chose Moneybagg Yo because he thought his name was fitting given the track title.
The title, cover art, and track list for DMX’s Exodus album were revealed on May 10, 2021. Fans were quick to notice Pop Smoke’s absence, leading to lots of rumor and gossip.
The retail version of “Money Money Money” featuring Moneybagg Yo released with the rest of the album on May 28, 2021. Whether the original version DMX intended to release will ever see the light of day is unclear.

DMX feat. Griselda - Hood Blues

Wreszcie porządny album od DMX'a! Świetne pożegnanie z nim. Nawet nie przeszkadza mi popowość niektórych kawałków, bo wynagradzają to te bardziej hardkorowe. Goście powypadali w większości świetnie, a zwłaszcza The LOX, Griselda i Nas (fajnie, że jest aż na dwóch trackach). Nie jest to może album roku, ale jak na album pośmiertny broni się. O wiele lepsze od ostatnich kilku potworków w jego dyskografii jak w sumie wszystkie jego płytki od "Grand Champ".

Grand Champ pozostanie moim numerem 1 w jego dyskografii. Swoje ostatnie zdjęcie które wrzucił na insta podpisał tytułem tego albumu i coś w tym albumie/historii jest, że chce się do tego wracać. Gdy zobaczyłem, że będzie feat z Griseldą czekałem na to mocno i pomimo gryzących się opinii to mój faworyt. Teledysk genialnie dopełnia całość. Zorganizowany na cześć DMX'a odsłuch albumu z zawodnikami jak Conway czy Fab to piękna sprawa i klimat.
