Yes. Desliets was originally working on Prince of Persia at Ubisoft. While working on it he had ideas which emerged into Assassin's Creed's parkour system, and the first game came out. During the second game's development, which was suddenly set in Renaissance Italy and not the crusades as one might have expected, Ubisoft execs realised that they could set the game mechanics in any setting in history and saw dollar signs. But Desliets always said that it was supposed to be a self contained trilogy about Desmond. AC2 was going to be how he learned assassin skills through the bleeding effect, and AC3 was going to be all about Desmond in the modern age.
AC2 was chopped in half and that was the start of the problems. Originally AC2 was supposed to contain a huge chunk of the Rome story but presumably without Borgia towers, renovations, and other things which fleshed the story into a longer game. The conspiracy was supposed to lead to Rome and follow the Spaniard, revealing Cesare and some other villains, and finally finishing with Ezio in the vault, ending his story there. The whistle stop tour to Rome at the end of AC2 between the Venice and Rome eras of his life was supposed to be how AC2 ended but after Ezio had done a lot of work in Rome. (Ezio was originally inspired by Machiavelli's book The Prince and Machiavelli's introduction at the end of AC2 was supposed to be a big inflection point in Ezio finally becoming a master assassin. That's why he's inducted into the Assassin order officially at the very end of the game after he's already saved the day; AC2 in it's entirety is basically Ezio's origin story, and then Rome is where he makes his own mark as a master assassin. It's very obvious from the contents of AC2 and Brotherhood that the two were always supposed to be the same experience and were conceived of at the same time.)
So while it's certainly true that Ubisoft wanted control of the series for commercial reasons, it's also true that Desliets set himself up for a a dose of reality by trying to make AC2 bigger than they could cope with at the time. There is a reasonable case to say that splitting it in two was a commercially wise decision.
Either way, by chopping the game in two this created contractual issues, specifically around Kristin Bell who had signed on for three games. There are reports on the internet lately that she wanted more money including royalties, and instead they just wrote some crap about Lucy being a double agent and a Templar all along and just killed her off.
Desliets left during the development of Brotherhood for a "creative break" (meaning he'd been forced to resign), and joined (I think) THQ Nordic and announced he was working on a new game set in another period of history, 1666 Amsterdam. Ubisoft bought the place out. They promptly shuttered his game and threw him out. Petty doesn't begin to describe it.
